Kids as Teachers: Learning in Action at The Village School

At The Village School, learning doesn’t just happen in one direction — sometimes, our students step into the role of teacher. Through our Kids as Teachers (KAT) series,  Lower School K-3 classes invite parents into the classroom for a unique “role reversal,” where students become the instructors and guide their parents through a hands-on lesson.

This week, our First Grade class kicked off the series by teaching their parents how to grow a sunflower. 🌻 Students welcomed their parents with excitement and confidence, ready to share what they had learned about plants and growth. Using the step-by-step instructions they wrote in their journals, each student led their parent through the process of planting seeds in a pot to take home — a blend of literacy, science, and learning in action.

As philosopher Seneca once said, “While we teach, we learn.” For our young student-teachers, this activity deepened their understanding and strengthened their communication skills. For parents, it offered a special window into the classroom — a chance to experience the curiosity, friendships, and joy that fill their child’s school day.

The Kids as Teachers series is a cherished Village tradition that highlights the partnership between school and home. It reminds us that education thrives when families are part of the journey — when learning is shared, celebrated, and lived out together. 💛
